UV Light for Your AC: What It Really Does
UV lamps are one of the most oversold add-ons in the industry. Installed at the coil and maintained, they do one job well in a humid climate. Here is the honest version.
What the Research Supports
- Keeping the coil cleanEPA cites research showing about a 99% reduction of microbes on irradiated HVAC surfaces, which is why coil placement is the strongest use.
- Why that matters hereASHRAE notes that growth on coils raises airflow resistance and lowers heat exchange, and that the effect is larger in hot, humid climates with continuously wet coils.
- Airborne germs: limitedThe same EPA summary found only a 25 to 30% drop in airborne bacteria, and says typical home UV units do not appear effective as a sole control.
UV does not capture or remove particles, so it never replaces a good filter (EPA). And ASHRAE notes there are no peer-reviewed studies yet proving energy savings from coil UV, so we do not promise them.
Living With a UV System Safely
Safe to do yourself
- Never look at a lit lampUV-C is harmful to eyes and skin (Honeywell owner guide).
- Power off and waitDisconnect power before servicing and wait about 15 minutes before handling the bulb (Honeywell).
- Replace yearlyHoneywell recommends replacing the bulb once a year.
- Recycle the bulbUV bulbs contain mercury, so do not put them in household trash.
Stop and call a pro
- Any "ozone" purifier pitchEPA says no federal agency has approved ozone generators for occupied spaces, and uncoated UV lamps can emit ozone.
- Installation in the air handlerLamp placement, wiring and interlocks are a professional job.
Done Right, or Not at All
- Ozone-free lamps (coated or doped quartz), since uncoated UV-C lamps can produce ozone (EPA)
- Mounted to irradiate the coil and drain pan, where the benefit is documented
- Interlocked or labeled for safe servicing, since UV-C is harmful to eyes and skin
- Annual lamp replacement scheduled; ASHRAE notes a visible glow does not mean the lamp still emits UV-C

Questions About UV Light Purification
How often do UV lamps need replacing?
About once a year. ASHRAE notes annual replacement is prudent for lamps running continuously, and that the blue glow can continue after UV output fades.
Will a UV light kill viruses in my home?
Do not count on it. EPA found typical residential UV units do not deliver enough dose to kill most airborne microbes.
Musty Smell From the Vents?
We will check the coil and drain first, then tell you honestly whether UV will help.
